Role: Country Legal Director – Medical Devices (Japan, with regional scope)

What you'll do

• Act as the senior legal leader and primary legal advisor for the business in Japan and a neighbouring Asian market.
• Provide strategic and practical legal counsel on regulatory, compliance, corporate governance, commercial contracting and dispute matters.
• Ensure adherence to local laws, industry codes and company policies.
• Support investigations, litigation and government inquiries.
• Review, draft and negotiate complex commercial agreements.
• Advise senior leadership on risk mitigation strategies.
• Collaborate with regional and global legal colleagues.
• Support organisational change, transactions and strategic initiatives during a period of significant business transformation.

Must-haves

• A law degree (LLB, JD or equivalent) and the professional qualifications to practise law in Japan.
• 10+ years of progressive legal experience in regulated industries.
• Strong knowledge of commercial, regulatory and compliance law for medical devices / healthcare.
• Ability to give clear, practical legal advice to senior leaders.
• Experience managing external counsel and complex matters.
• Proven judgement, integrity and effectiveness in a matrix organisation.
• Fluent Japanese and business-level English.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (up to approx. 20%).

Nice-to-haves

• Medical device, pharmaceutical or life sciences industry experience.
• Multi-country or regional legal responsibilities, including other North Asian markets.
• Knowledge of corporate transactions, restructurings or business separations.
• Experience mentoring and developing legal team members.
• Additional Asian language skills.

Salary: base approx. 1,600万円 + 25% target bonus + 25% LTI (approx. 2,000万円 cash / 2,400万円 total incl. LTI)
